quote
  • [We] expect the future of rotorcraft and commuter transportation to be sustained autorotative flight… and GBA [Skyworks] is the only company in the world who fully understands this technology and is ahead by 20 years.” Deutsches Zentrum für Luft und Raumfahrt e.V., (Germany) (Equivalent to US NASA)

  • The continuing success of aviation and the benefits it provides will require changes to accommodate demand … and this is the most critical long-term issue facing all aspects of the air transportation system … this may require widespread adoption of operating concepts that use runways and air space in new ways …business as usual, in the form of continued evolutionary improvements to existing technologies, is unlikely to meet the challenge of greatly increased demand”

  • [Current helicopter manufacturers have] gotten behind the power curve… the U.S. government needs to start building vertical lift aircraft from scratch and not just focus on upgrading existing helicopters.

  • If the program is successful [Skyworks Heliplane], it will change the nature of VTOL. It could be the birth of a new age of rotary-wing aviation.

ABOUT SKYWORKS

Skyworks is the world leader in the science and technology of gyronautics, focusing on the design and development of high performance gyroplanes. Using highly advanced technology and modern aerospace science, engineering, and design methods, we strive to make air travel safer, more cost efficient and effective.

Skyworks has been developing manned and unmanned vertical lift gyroplane technologies for more than two decades. These advanced sustained autorotative flight technologies enable aircraft to be both runway independent and economical, and yet remain unconstrained by the physics imposed speed, range, and payload limitations of a helicopter. After 25 years of research and development and more than 40 patents issued and more under application, Skyworks is the undisputed global leader in gyronautics — the science of safety, simplicity, and sustainability applied practically to change the way people and goods move about the globe.

Gyronautics

The core of Skyworks’ Gyroplane and Gyrodyne technology is Skyworks’ unparalleled understanding of sustained autorotative flight. Autorotation is the ability of a free-spinning rotor to generate lift.

For a Gyroplane in forward flight, as shown in the diagram to the right, the unpowered rotor creates lift through autorotation, with forward thrust provided by an engine-driven propeller(s) or by jet engine(s), much like an airplane. Larger and/or faster Skyworks Gyroplanes have airplane wings.

Helicopters vs Gyroplanes comes down to one thing: Design Simplicity

Gyroplanes are much less complicated than helicopters which are far less complicated than tilt-rotor aircraft – thus, next to airplanes, gyroplanes and gyrodynes are the least complex of all.

  • Reliability – Far fewer moving parts means fewer problems
  • Mission Readiness – Far less maintenance required to remain airworthy, so nearly always available
  • Lower Acquisition and Operating Costs – The pocketbook benefits of simplicity
  • Cost and Profitability – Low Cost = High Profitability: lower complexity, maintenance, acquisition cost, and operational costs = much higher profitability

Higher Speed
Greater Range
Higher Payload Efficiencies
